I am a member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and specialize in helping students build confidence, prepare for auditions (All-State, Minnesota Youth Symphony, and Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies), and succeed in college music applications.
Lessons are available in my St. Paul home studio, as well as online and hybrid formats.
A trial lesson is a chance to get to know each other, discuss goals, and experience how lessons are structured in my studio.
Studio Overview
Beginning Students (~30 min practicing a day)
In the first six months, beginning students build the foundation for confident, lifelong playing. We focus on developing a relaxed, healthy setup and a beautiful tone from the very start.
Students will:
Build a strong technical foundation in posture, bow hold, and left-hand setup
Develop a resonant, beautiful tone on the violin or viola
Establish an effective and consistent practice routine at home
Learn one-octave major and minor scales
Perform in their first studio recital
Intermediate Students (1-2 hours practicing a day)
Intermediate students move from foundational skills into more expressive, independent playing. At this stage, we focus on developing stronger technical control, musical confidence, and preparation for advanced ensemble and audition opportunities.
Students will:
Explore orchestra and chamber music opportunities such as Minnesota Youth Symphonies, Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, and Artaria Chamber Music School
Receive guided preparation for orchestra and youth ensemble auditions
Develop advanced technical skills including shifting, vibrato, and expanding bow techniques (spiccato and other articulations)
Work on two-octave scales, arpeggios, and double-stops
Progress through standard études such as Wohlfahrt, Mazas, and Ševčík
Build more efficient, focused practice habits
Begin exploring solo Bach and more substantial repertoire
Advanced Students (2-4 hours practicing a day)
Advanced students are focused on refining artistry and performance readiness at a pre-professional level.
Students will:
Receive guided preparation for college auditions, competitions, and summer music festivals
Develop the mental skills needed for confident performance, including managing performance anxiety, preventing injury, and building reliable audition preparation strategies
Work on advanced technical material including three-octave scales, arpeggios, and double-stops
Progress through standard étude repertoire such as Kreutzer, Campagnoli, and Rode
Study and perform major sonatas and concertos from the core repertoire
Refine interpretation, with an emphasis on harmony, form, and style.
Receive support through the college music application and audition process
Many advanced students are preparing for conservatory auditions and university music programs, in addition to local and national festivals.
What Students and Parents Say
“When our teen son expressed interest in viola performance beyond high school, we knew that we needed to find a uniquely talented teacher to mentor him to the next level. We were fortunate to be connected with Daniel on the recommendation of Peter Slowik, Professor of Viola at Oberlin Conservatory, after our son attended a summer music workshop. Our son quickly found the advanced level instruction from Daniel to be transformative. He appreciates that his lessons are highly focused with specific and impactful feedback. Daniel is passionate about the viola, which makes his lessons fun in the context of high standards. As parents not involved in the music world, Daniel has been incredibly kind regarding support for exploring a career path in music and discovering new opportunities. As college music auditions approached, Daniel guided him on a successful path to rigorously prepare the appropriate repertoire. Our student is delighted to have the opportunity to continue his viola studies at Oberlin Conservatory, and Daniel was key in helping him achieve this goal. We highly recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a kind, professional, and incredibly talented teacher!” - Mark and Carilyn Wieland
